Spotify NFT Trials and Madonna’s First NFT Collection

  • A Q&A with Mark Cuban’s entertainment platform Fireside reveals Web3 is breaking Hollywood
  • Spotify and Instagram experiment with NFT viewing features

According to Music Ally, music streaming service Spotify has selected a small group of artists to embed and promote NFT galleries on their profiles. NFTs (non-refundable tokens) will appear below artists’ songs and albums.

Steve Aoki and The Wombats were among the first musicians to join the test, and they’re both big NFT collectors. This feature is currently available to select Android users located in the US who can view and purchase available NFTs from external markets.

Since users cannot make direct purchases on Spotify, the company does not make any cuts from NFT sales. Spotify sent out a survey to gauge interest and excitement for any future additional NFT implementations on its platform.

Recently, Meta also rolled out a feature for certain Instagram creators to view their NFTs on their posts.

“Queen of Pop” downfall

Madonna released a non-tradable token collaboration with NFT artist Beeple last week on SuperRare that garnered descriptors like “weird” and “spicy” due to its graphic content. Titled “Mother of Creation,” a three-part series of NFT videos explores the concepts of birth, creation, and motherhood.

The videos feature a nude 3D avatar of Madonna giving birth to a tree, butterflies and centipedes against different backdrops. According to the website, the message compares how children are born to how an artist brings creativity to life: “You never know where you’ll find life, and you never lose hope.”

Proceeds from the sale will benefit three nonprofits supporting mothers around the world, including The Voices of Children Foundation, The City of Joy and Black Mama’s Bail Out. The three pieces were created with infrastructure support by Moonpay, who reportedly contributed $100,000 to each charity.

So far, it has accrued 309.1 ETH ($636,823) in SuperRare sales at the time of publication.

Fireside x SKALE Hollywood grant program

Mark Cuban’s entertainment platform Fireside and Ethereum-based blockchain network SKALE recently announced a $100 million Web3 creator funding. The “Creatives Unleashed” grant program aims to enable the next generation of Hollywood creators to transition to Web3 and produce content without intermediaries.

Blockworks spoke with Fireside and SKALE to learn more about the partnership.

BW: What types of creatives is the program looking for?

fireplace head: Fireside is home to more than 2,000 different types of creators, including podcasters, vodcasters, writers, comedians, actors, television presenters, filmmakers, musicians, and more. This program is for all Fireside Creators who want to “transform their business to Web3” with better community engagement tools and unlock crypto-enabled business models. This is the solution for any professional content creator with an established audience and looking to simply accelerate the transition of their media and entertainment business to Web3 via Fireside without a large upfront investment.

BW: What problems is Fireside in Hollywood trying to solve? Why are you using blockchain technology to do this?

fireplace head: We’re getting signals that the next big content hits will be created directly between creators and their audiences and brands. Web3 is where it comes in, eliminating traditional middlemen and unlocking entirely new business models where communities and brands can now participate as part of intellectual property creation and distribution and help shape the media empires of the future.

Fireside is the next evolution of participatory, creative-led and decentralized media and entertainment, bringing creators and their audiences closer than ever before.

BW: What is SKALE’s long-term vision? Why partner with a content studio like Fireside?

SCALE: Our goal is to bring the power of blockchains to 1 billion people worldwide in an optimized way to deliver a great user experience to everyday consumers. We do this by creating a scalable network of hundreds to tens of thousands of interconnected SCALE chains working to power decentralized Web3 applications, much as Amazon Web Services does for mobile applications today.

The reason we’re so excited about working with Fireside is that they’re creating a truly new paradigm for how content is financed, created and distributed, all using the power of decentralized blockchains. Content has always been king, and we love to offer a solution that allows creators to do it faster, more affordable, and eliminate middlemen so they can create more content for people to consume.
