How many Instagram followers do you need to start getting paid?

  • Several thousand followers on Instagram describe some users as “influential”.

  • But at what point – and with how many followers – can an influencer start making money?

  • Insider spoke with dozens of influencers about when, how and how much money they started making.

With a few thousand followers on Instagram these days, it’s easy to ask yourself: When can I start making money doing this?

The good news is that there is no strict minimum.

Three influencers interviewed by Insider – all with less than 3,000 Instagram followers – said they get paid from brands to post to their small audiences.

Kayla Compton, for example, became a brand ambassador for PuraVida, the jewelry company that had less than 2,000 followers last year, told Insider. At the time, the initial sponsored content package was $250, and she also got paid by sharing affiliate links or codes with her followers and earning a small commission, she told me.

And now, since the company introduced link stickers to all accounts in October, it’s easier than ever to share affiliate links on Instagram stories.

Instagram also pays some influencers directly through incentive programs like “Bonuses” for Reels, which require at least 1,000 views (rather than the minimum follower count) for Reels. On the other hand, other Instagram monetization features like “Badges”, Instagram’s tipping tool for IG Live, require creators to have at least 10,000 followers. Many of these programs are also restricted to certain countries, are at least 18 years old, and require accounts to be registered in the app as business or creator accounts.

While the doors have opened for more creators to start making a living on Instagram, they often don’t immediately start earning full-time income (many micro-influencers with less than 100,000 followers work full-time as influencers).

Today, influencers no longer need hundreds of thousands of followers to start making money.

Here are a few reasons:

  1. “Nano” and “micro” influencers (typically less than 100,000 followers) are recruited by many brands across industries. These smaller influencers demonstrated the power of niche and related communities on Instagram, where fake followers and disproportionate engagement flooded the platform. Influencers can earn hundreds of thousands of dollars from these deals.

  3. Affiliate links Sharing is easier than ever. But some affiliate programs like LTK or ShopStyle have their own requirements.
